Coined the nation’s ‘coal capital’, Mackay exports one quarter of the world’s coking coal from its two coal terminals.

Potential impact of mining operations to ground water

Working in close collaboration with a leading mining company in central Queensland, GHD has monitored the impacts of coal mining on groundwater dependent ecosystems.

Our team monitored groundwater dependent fauna as an indicator of groundwater health and examined changes to groundwater quantity and quality along with an assessment of the potential short and long-term impacts on subterranean aquatic communities. This proactive approach has enabled the mining company to use the data generated from this project to inform their Regional Environmental Monitoring Program as well as assisting in the development of their sustainable groundwater management plan.

Forgan Bridge

Forgan Bridge across the Pioneer River in Mackay, was first opened in 1938 by the then Premier of Queensland and Member for Mackay, William Forgan-Smith. The bridge provides direct access to Mackay's central business district from the northern suburbs.

Forgan Bridge had undergone significant maintenance over the years including underpinning and widening in 1979 and girder repair work more recently. Increased traffic volumes brought about by Mackay's rapid population growth and expansion of the northern suburbs of the city, has seen the original bridge reach peak capacity and nearing the end of its' design life.

Expanding Mackay’s Industrial Area

The Bowen Basin mining boom in central Queensland is generating high demand for new industrial premises for mining services and supporting industries. This growth is boosting the expansion of the Paget Industrial hub, to the south of the Mackay city centre.

GHD has been engaged by the Mackay Regional Council to provide the civil infrastructure design for a new 70ha, 100-lot fully serviced development in Paget, on the site of a former sugar cane and turf farm.

Environment Approval quarantine waste

GHD was commissioned by the Mackay Port Authority in Queensland to provide consulting services for the proposed quarantine waste incinerator at Mackay Port.

The services include the initial feasibility study, site selection assessment and the development approval application (with the supporting site-based management plan).

Iain Mckenzie

Iain is the Transportation Business Group Manager for North Queensland. He is a civil engineer with 25 years' experience in the design and management of civil engineering projects, including a number of major projects ranging in value up to A$130 million. Such projects have involved the coordination of multi-disciplinary inputs covering areas such as roads, drainage, geotechnical, structures, planning and environmental engineering.

Robby Chohan

Ravdeep (Robby) Chohan is a RPEQ qualified civil/structural engineer with more than 15 years’ experience. A North Queensland local, he joined GHD as a graduate engineer in 1997.

Robby manages our Mackay office and is also Project Director for a number of major projects including the multimillion dollar redevelopment of Hastings Deering’s facilities in Mackay, and was the lead structural engineer on the AUD188 million Cairns Cleaner Seas Alliance project.

Phil Jeston

Phil has more than 15 years' experience in environmental management including auditing, developing management systems, obtaining approvals, and assessment of environmental projects, with experience in port and marina infrastructure, including dredging and extraction approvals, environmental monitoring, and contaminated land assessments.

He has site experience working as the principal environmental advisor within the coal industry and has overseen site water management, site approvals, EMS recertification, biodiversity protection and cultural heritage management. Philip also has an extensive background in project management covering the field of agricultural and scientific research. Phil has a Master of Environmental Science and is a member of EIANZ.
