GHD gained local presence in Chile in January, 2001, through the integration of the Chilean engineering services company Promina S.A. With Promina’s 10-year history in Chile and GHD’s international experience since its foundation in Australia in 1928, GHD has been able to provide its clients with international experience in a local context.

Today, the GHD Chile operation employs more than 90 people. More significant than the numbers is the diversity of skills that we provide including:

Marine - marine structures, modelling
Energy - thermal, hydro and renewable power generation and transmission and distribution
Environment - contaminated land, natural resources, environmental impact assessment approvals, public consultation, management and audits, waste management and contaminated land

Coal to the Rescue in Chile

Chile was a country with a heavy reliance on hydropower and gas fired combined cycle. However, a crisis in the supply of gas to Chile forced many of the gas fired plants to swap to expensive imported oil as replacement fuel. The long term solution for base load power is the development of coal fired power stations and more hydropower.

GHD’s Santiago office is playing a major role in the development of new power projects in Chile and nearby Peru with significant roles in environmental permitting and project development. One of these roles is Owner’s Engineer to Colbun for the development of a 350MW coal fired power station.

Santa Maria Power Station, Coronel

In 2006, GHD was appointed by Colbun as their Owner’s Engineer for the development of the first 350 MW unit of the 700 MW coal fired Santa Maria Power Station at Coronel, 500 kilometres south of Santiago. Unit 1 is expected to enter commercial service in late 2010.

The first stage of the Santa Maria power plant involves a 350 MW pulverized coal combustion plant with a seawater desulfurization system, electrostatic particulate removal and low NOx burners.In addition to the Owner’s Engineer base scope services, GHD has completed a number of commissions for Colbun including:

Codelco Mining power plant

GHD completed a study of operational and maintenance services on high and medium voltage electrical assets of the Andina mine facilities.

Located 3000 m above sea level, the Andina mine draws its energy from the national power grid via more than 100 km of transmission lines and 10 main power substations.

Designing Ports for Easter Island

Easter Island, located in the Pacific Ocean 3700km to the west of continental Chile, is dependent on shipping to supply goods for the local population and for its growing tourism industry.

The island, however, lacks a sheltered all-weather port. Ships that arrive to the island unload goods offshore onto smaller boats. These boats unload the goods at a small-scale dock in Hanga-Piko. This system delays the delivery of goods to the island and increases transport costs.

Paula Arias

Paula Arias is the Manager – Transport of our Santiago office in Chile. She is a Structural Engineer with a Masters in Structural and Geotechnical Engineering. Paula has more than 17 years experience. Paula has had significant involvement in the design of maritime and coastal infrastructure including design in high risk seismic areas, condition & structural assessments, concept and feasibility studies, master plans and tender/contract documentation.

Grace Hardy

Grace is an Agronomist, with an MBA and has 18 years of professional experience in social and environmental studies. For 5 years she was the leader of the EIA Service Line in GHD-Chile and currently she holds the position of Environmental Area Manager. Grace has managed environmental studies associated with catchment management projects, reservoirs and large dams, new and existing mining operations, water treatment projects, drinking water systems for rural areas as well as road, hydraulic and marine infrastructure. Grace has also been involved in social studies and stakeholder engagement programs. Grace's professional experience includes consultancy projects for the mining-environmental sector at the Department of Hydraulic Works and at the Agricultural and Livestock Service of Chile.
