GHD established its operations in China in 1995 through a joint venture. The partnership allowed us to undertake a number of significant projects across China. GHD established offices in Beijing and Changsha in 2004 and rapidly expanded in 2006 through acquisition in Beijing.

GHD now has well-established offices in Beijing, Changsha, Wuhan, and Hong Kong, employing almost 300 staff. GHD China also provides services of a global standard to support our growing workload, particularly in Australia and the Middle East.

Tian Jin Cuijin Lake Project

The project site covers 93.4ha in a good location in Tianjin city. GHD was commissioned to undertake overall concept design, detailed planning and architectural design.

After investigation of the local markets and studies of the location and landform, GHD architects decided to adopt a western style community planning concept to create a sustainable European-style small town. The concept features a high-profile international villa and an ecological resort that can be developed in a wetland location.

Changqingqiao high-rise residential complex project

GHD collaborated with Dutch architects KCAP to provide master planning services for the Gemdale Shenyang Chang Qing 'Trinity' project in Shenyang, northern China. The project site covers
883,100sq m, including 210,000sq m of residential, commercial and community programs.

Following the master planning phase, GHD provided architectural design services.

GHD’s Beijing ITS team delivered this project, which is one of the most advanced intelligent motorway systems in China.

The project involved developing an architecture based on the National ITS Framework and Standards, and a function design that analysed user requirements.

Jin Zhang Zou

Dr Jin Zhang Zou has over 27 years of combined practical, research and management experience in the broad fields of civil and geotechnical engineering. He graduated from Wuhan University in 1983 and worked on a major dam project in China before obtaining a PhD degree in civil engineering from the University of Queensland in 1992. In the same year, he joined GHD as part of the Geo-Eng acquisition having worked in the Victoria's Latrobe Valley, Australia as a geotechnical and groundwater modelling specialist. Jin Zhang has been instrumental in establishing and growing GHD's business in China and with Chinese companies investing in Australia. In his current role as General Manager of China, Jin Zhang oversees our business and manages multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams to deliver major projects. He is also responsible for business development and maintaining relationships with Chinese clients.

Qingping Zhu

Dr Qingping Zhu joined GHD in April 2010 when the China Water International Engineering Company (CWIEC) merged with GHD. Qingping has a Doctorate in Water Resources Management from Hohai University in China. Prior to becoming General Manager of CWIEC, he was the Deputy Chief Engineer, Deputy Director General of Hydrology Bureau and Division Chief for the Yellow River Conservancy Commission of the Ministry of Water Resources.

As Operating Centre Manager, Dr Zhu is involved in a diverse number of projects including water planning and optimizing allocation, water conservation, water policy and strategy formulation and hydropower stations.
