GHD provides a complete range of civil and environmental engineering services to municipal, industrial, and private clients supported by the global GHD network. Known in the US as a leading provider of water, wastewater and environmental services, GHD has a growing presence in the property, energy and resources and transportation sectors. Working across disciplines and with a client-centered focus, we deliver services at all stages of project development from feasibility studies to planning, design, construction, maintenance and management.

Our Santa Rosa office has a rich 30 year history in contributing to and supporting our local community. We offer the use of our facilities to the local Chamber of Commerce, Rotary, the Council on Aging, the American Society of Civil Engineers youth forum, the American Institute of Architects, and leadership groups Vistage International and Tomorrow’s Leaders Today.

Our people mentor local youth as a partner in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program, the nation's premiere donor and volunteer-supported youth mentoring organization, and supports Expanding Your Horizons, which conducts science and mathematics conferences to nurture girls' interest in science and math courses and encourage them to consider careers in science, technology, engineering, and math. Our Santa Rosa office also sponsors school sports and arts programs, contributes to career days and field trips, and funds scholarships.

GHD's Santa Rosa people regularly join creek, beach and river clean-ups and tree planting days as well as the Human Race fundraiser event. Our volunteers take part in charity food drives and work on community housing projects. We have supported non-profit groups for a decade through the Celebrate Community program.

The Santa Rosa office has won the Spirit of Philanthropy Award through its Celebrate Community partnership and an award from the City of Santa Rosa for tree planting. Individual staff members have won awards for graffiti abatement and other volunteer work. Our employees nominated the office as one of the city’s best places to work in the North Bay Business Journal poll in 2009, 2010 and 2011.

Santa Rosa Urban Reuse

image

The City of Santa Rosa’s water recycling program provides high-quality water for agriculture, energy production and urban uses. Historically, this program was managed for its wastewater disposal benefit.  GHD assisted in the development of the City’s Incremental Recycled Water Program – a 30 year master plan for managing the system. We then led a consulting team tasked with evaluating a range of alternatives for expanding Santa Rosa’s urban water recycling program by up to 6600 acre-feet per year, as one piece of the incremental program.

Because of an increasingly constrained regional water supply, the benefits of urban reuse were studied by the water utility and wastewater utility in partnership. The analysis included over a dozen alternatives for system configuration and size and concluded that a 3000 acre-foot expansion provided the best value for both utilities.

Habitat Mapping of Klamath River Corridor - California

image

GHD was commissioned by the Yurok Tribe to improve habitat mapping of the Tribe’s 64,000 acre reservation, which is located along the Klamath River in far northern California. The primary goal was to develop GIS layers that would better enable wildfire risk modelling and to provide an improved basis for habitat conservation planning and forestry practices.

GHD utilised a combination of remote sensing, GIS and field sampling activities to produce a customised vegetation model and habitat classification map. This included an analysis of LiDAR in the context of canopy height, regional geologic and soil data, existing vegetation data, and field validation. An unsupervised spectral classification of 4-band orthoimagery was undertaken to partition the study area into stratified clusters of presumed vegetation categories. Target vegetation classes were then identified via local ecological knowledge, including input from ecologists, timber managers and Tribal members. The result was a preliminary vegetation class model and base map that was used to conduct stratified field sampling for confirmation and training of the model.
