GHD was the primary design
consultant for this design/build project located at Naval Base
Kitsap at Bangor, Washington. The project included design and
construction of a new two-story 22,800 square foot, ADA-compliant,
sustainable-design (LEED® certified)
underwater acoustics research laboratory with an open storage
lay-down area and parking to replace the existing acoustics
research spaces located at the Puget Sound Naval
Shipyard.
To provide for the relocation of the Fox Island Laboratory
on-water operations, the project also included the design and
construction of a 190-foot long, 25-foot wide precast and
cast-in-place concrete pier for personnel and HS-20 truck access,
eight mooring dolphins, and a 120-foot long, 22 foot wide steel
truss transfer span to serve a relocated 350-foot long, 59-foot
wide, 15-foot high floating concrete pontoon at the project
site. The mooring of small to medium sized vessels and a
single, large research barge, new facilities on the relocated
pontoon, electrical, communication, water and sewer utilities, and
site grading and roadway improvements landside of the pier were
also included.
