Al Ain University

Established in 1976, Al Ain University in the United Arab Emirates is being redeveloped to reflect the country’s growing higher education needs.

GHD is providing structural, mechanical, electrical and hydraulic engineering design services, as well as building fire services and IT communication services, for the AUD$500 million project. The campus will have a built-up area of almost 292,000sq m across 350ha and will accommodate up to 18,000 students.

Al Wakrah Hospital

GHD is the principal consultant for the design and post -contract supervision of this 300-bed, 122,000sqm acute care hospital, south of Doha.

The design is based on concentric circles, evocative of a stone thrown in a pond, to symbolise the outward growth of the hospital as it it expands into the future. The circular design allows for maximum use of light, which is both environmentally sound and also thought to be beneficial in the healing of patients.

Bayside College

GHD was commissioned to prepare a design for a new Year 1 through to Year 9 campus at Bayside College in Australia. The campus facilitates the merger of several local schools.

The layout of the various buildings are structured around the idea of communal learning villages sharing a common resource centre.

Beijing Normal University

GHD delivered this award winning master plan for a new campus for Beijing Normal University, one of the most reputable universities in China. 

The new campus is located in Changping District, north Beijing and covers a total of 133ha.

Drouin Primary School

GHD was commissioned to develop a design for the redevelopment of Drouin Primary School. The masterplan evolved from a consultative process involving the school community, school council members, SCA management and GHD's architects.

Stage 1 included the refurbishment of the existing heritage listed building into the administration centre for the school. It incorporated the construction of six new classrooms and a library along School Road .

Dubai University Hospital

GHD is providing a range of services for a 400-bed tertiary care teaching hospital development in Dubai. Known as University Hospital, the project boasts a construction budget of AED2.1 billion (AU$700 million). University Hospital contributes to Dubai’s vision to become a global centre of excellence for healthcare delivery.

Located within a low-rise, Mediterranean-themed, master planned healthcare development, this 18-storey building has a contemporary double skin facade and includes a three-level basement with parking for 2500 cars. Medical care will be provided in a four-level podium block with bed wards located in the tower above. Administrative offices will be housed in a separate eight-storey building to the south, linked to the medical block via a glazed walkway.

Flowerdale Children's Hub

GHD was engaged in September 2009 to be the principal consultant for the new Flowerdale Children’s Hub in the Hume region. Flowerdale Children’s Hub is a consolidation and revitalistation of key community services and facilities, previously damaged or destroyed in the February 2009 ‘Black Saturday’ bushfires in Victoria.

The hub will provide an important landmark adress and act as a central meeting point for the local community, as well as offering a range of services, and Multi-pupose school and community facilities as part of the Building Education Revolution school program.

Guide Dog Centre Victoria

GHD's architects have designed a stylish contemporary new education centre for the Guide Dogs Victoria. Set amongst the bushland along the Yarra River in Kew, the proposed new building will provide a central venue for training, eduction and administration activities for the association.

GHD designed the facility to consolidate the various campus buildings, presenting a fresh image by providing a new entrance experience and arrival point in a low, lean envelope.

Heathmont College

In November 2009, Heathmont College commissioned GHD to develop a masterplan for the school. The design has subsequently evolved into a $13 million redevelopment project and is the result of a consultative process involving the school community, school council members, and GHD's architects.

Innovative design solutions have been employed resulting in a reorganisation of the school into diff erent age-level learning groups. Within these cohorts, a range of programs have been accommodated in flexible learning spaces project and wet areas space grouped around individual resource centres.

Hong Kong Academy

Hong Kong Academy was founded in 2000 to serve the educational needs of Hong Kong’s expatriate and local communities by providing a broad, international style curriculum that incorporated the best teaching practices from around the globe.

Hong Kong Academy is an inquiry-based, child-centred community school that fosters diversity and allows students across a spectrum of learning needs to reach their full potential. Hong Kong Academy was the first school in Hong Kong to introduce
the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum. It maintains a 1:5 teacher-student ratio, the lowest in Hong Kong.

Khalifa Stadium

A spectacular new roof and feature lighting consolidate the status of Khalifa Stadium as one of Doha’s premier developments.

The Khalifa Sports City Development Committee awarded GHD two contracts to redevelop the Khalifa Sports City. The scope of the work included an upgrade of the stadium and landscape redevelopment over an area of 95ha.

Koroit and District Primary School

Following intervies with a series of architiects, GHD was appointed for full architecture and engineering services for the redevelopment of Koroit and District Primary School.

The project commenced with a new site masterplan and included careful heritage assessment of three historic buildings located to the north of the site (the original school, school residence and the original Koroit Courthouse).

Leanyer Water Park

The vision for the Leanyer Recreation Park project was to create a facility in a natural environment that will provide the Darwin community with diverse, challenging, fun and safe recreation and education opportunities.

GHD undertook stage one of the design in 2003. This involved redevelopment of the site of the former Leanyer Lake into a multi-use recreation area. The centrepiece of the project is a 2000sq m walk-in swimming pool with cascading paddle pools and a 500sq m wet deck area equipped with various water play installations.

Mission Heights Primary

As the doors of new schools Mission Heights Primary and Mission Heights Junior College opened in February 2009, students experienced New Zealand’s first green schooling environment.

Situated in Auckland, the two schools, with shared library, administration, gymnasium and performing arts centre, will eventually cater for over 1800 students. And a ‘fast-tracked’ timeframe meant the project was not only of a large scale, but also required swift completion.

Royal Perth Hospital

New state trauma and burns units at The Royal Perth Hospital were completed in December 2007 and February 2008 respectively after a contract period of approximately 48 weeks.

The 3000sq m redevelopment on the third floor in the North Block provides an additional 40 beds to the hospital (25 new trauma beds, 10 relocated burns beds and five dual-use, i.e. trauma or burns, beds). This design flexibility allows the hospital to accommodate up to 30 trauma patients or 15 burns patients.. The design brief for the new AUD$8 million facility included major changes to the existing fire and smoke compartments (from a single fire zone to three separate fire zones and six separate smoke compartments) as well as the installation of a new air-conditioning plant room within the existing ceiling space on the third floor.

Skin and Cancer Centre

The Skin and Cancer Foundation purchased a property adjacent to its previous premises and engaged GHD to provide a master plan for the layout of the 1450sq m first floor level. The plan had to take into account the fact that once ground floor existing leases expire, the Foundation's services could expand if there was demand.

Strategically located in Carlton, Melbourne in an active medico-health precinct, the facility provides world-class services, education and research in dermatology. The distinctive building is located on a corner site and incorporates extensive car parking in the building and on the rooftop. It is set up to provide both consulting and treatment services for the largely senior patient base.

Technical College in Maitland

The Australian Government funded Australian Technical Colleges across Australia in areas where there are skills needs, a high youth population and a strong industry base

For the Maitland College project GHD provided the architectural design, documentation and building contract administration for this new technical high school campus.  Initially accommodating 130 students, the facilities include an administration building, classrooms, a library and workshops.

Traeger Park

Traeger Park sporting complex is the main sporting facility for Alice Springs and is a leading Australian venue for national and international sporting events.

In 2003, GHD prepared the master plan for the redevelopment of Traeger Park. This process involved public consultation, scoping and concept development for any future upgrading of the facility.

University of Melbourne - Rural Health Education Facility

Jointly funded by the University of Melbourne and Goulburn Valley Health, this project involved the development of facilities for the rural health division of the Department of Human Services in Victoria. Stage one includes teaching facilities, lecture theatres, meeting rooms, library and administration areas.

As a preliminary to this project, GHD prepared an overall site master plan that identified further accommodation facilities for those students and doctors being trained in the stage one facility.

University of Melbourne - Rural Health Student Accommodation

Stage two of the School of Rural Health facilities development includes student and staff accommodation. Residential buildings types range from shared accommodation to stand-alone town houses. The project comprises seven 11-bedroom buildings, each identified by form, material and colour selection.

The facilities, developed by the University of Melbourne and Goulburn Valley Health, are to enhance doctors’ experience of living and working in regional areas.

Darren is responsible for the collaborative development of our social infrastructure business across the globe in response to our clients’ needs and business drivers. He has 25 years’ experience in the construction industry and has led integrated design, project management and program management teams in the delivery of a range of projects for local, state and federal government agencies in addition to the private sector. His experience covers healthcare, emergency services, telecommunications, transportation facilities and education. Darren has played a key role in the acquisition, integration and operations management of an outsourced buildings’ delivery business providing a range of integrated services to Government including justice and correctional, education, public housing and government accommodation.

Stuart is an architect specialising in healthcare. He has considerable experience in the delivery of large and complex projects and draws from local, national and international experience in briefing, user group workshopping, design, documentation and team management of health projects. Prior to joining GHD, Stuart led a team that focused primarily in health and managed and delivered projects across Australia for both public and private clients. His international experience includes two years working on large PPP delivered healthcare projects and laboratories in the United Kingdom.

Geoff is a Seniors Living Specialist with extensive experience in the delivery of residential aged care facilities and various forms of independent living accommodation. Having been involved in the design, documentation and delivery of seniors living accommodation since1988, Geoff has amassed a considerable body of work that highlights his interest in pragmatic and cost effective solutions to housing our growing population of ageing Australians. Prior to joining GHD, Geoff worked with both the public and private seniors living sectors to create innovative architectural responses to the provision of their built infrastructure. Tomas Nohel

Tomas Nohel

Tomas has been responsible for infrastructure planning, strategy and business case development for a range of infrastructure projects including major stakeholder-sensitive justice and correctional infrastructure projects. Tomas brings a combination of excellent technical skills and a detailed understanding of the commercial environment coupled with extensive experience in strategic planning, project management and facilitation of large initiatives. He has recently been advising the government on options for major social infrastructure capital investment, the preparation of evidence reports for national policy initiatives and has worked as a Project Director on the implementation of a number of these policy initiatives.
