Bega Bypass

In May 2009, the Labor Member for Eden-Monaro, Mike Kelly MP, announced that GHD would partner with the RTA for the Concept and Detailed Design of the HW1 Princes Highway Bega Bypass.  Since then work on the design, geotechnical investigation and review of environmental factors for the bypass has progressed significantly, with documentation for construction tender having been completed.

The project includes 3.6 km of two lane rural highway, three bridges connecting communities with the Bega township, four reinforced soil retaining walls and three intersections.  The purposes of the project are to accommodate B-Double movements and to create the potential for reduced crash rates in the area by creating better transport pathways for local communities and highway users.

In delivering the project, GHD has drawn on staff from NSW and the ACT including from offices in Wollongong, Canberra, Nowra, Wagga Wagga, Port Macquarie and Sydney.  This reflects GHD’s commitment to achieving outstanding results for the RTA and the community of Bega, with the team focused on ensuring the RTA is able to deliver on its project promises.
Project goals align with key drivers of the RTA including a focus on safety during investigation, design, construction and operation while upholding quality and environmental expectations.

Project Manager, Stuart Clark of GHD, noted: “We recognise that this is a significant infrastructure project for the community of Bega and together with the RTA we have implemented a partnering approach for all aspects of the project.  Throughout the project, GHD and the RTA have investigated numerous options to ensure value for money outcomes for the community.”

Construction of the bypass is scheduled to commence in early 2012.
