CUB Yatala Brewery

Yatala Brewery wastewater was being pre-treated in a high-rate anaerobic plant and discharged to the sewer for further treatment at Beenleigh Water Reclamation Facility, Queensland.

This system did not have the capacity to support Carlton and United Beverages (CUB) plans to expand the brewery’s operations, where wastewater was expected to double.

Water supply infrastructure needed an upgrade to cope with the increase in operations. CUB proposed to construct a Water Management Plant (WMP) to treat water suitable for reuse within the non-food contact areas of the brewery. More than 100 cubic metres per hour could be used onsite for operations such as washdown, boiler makeup, cooling towers; conveyor lubes vacuum pumps, pasteurisers, etc.

GHD worked with CUB to investigate all WMP options. This included pilotted process and Membrane Bioreactors (MBR). An extensive expression of interest phase was conducted to assess what was available in the marketplace. This was followed by an invitation to tender by short listed consortia.

To test that the WMP would help CUB achieve their wastewater goals, a 1/20th scale pilot plant was set up at the brewery.

Following the pilot trial and tender phase, GHD recommended the most effective WMP solution for CUB to construct. The solution involved a fixed film bioreactor for organics removal, dissolved air flotation, filter for solids removal, microfiltration, reverse osmosis and disinfection. The recycled water is then reticulated through the brewery system in a dedicated system.
