DAAF Study

As part of the Australian Government’s Forest Industries Climate Change Research Fund program, GHD was engaged to examine how plantation fire risk profiles may change under climate change scenarios.

One of the key climate change risks for the plantation forest industry is increasing losses from fire, coupled with rising bushfire risk management costs.

A series of workshops on fire risk factors was conducted for select Australian Plantation Regions. GHD prepared, in collaboration with CSIRO, a set of fuel and fire behaviour guides to assist plantation owners/managers and fire managers to make rapid assessments of the fuel characteristics in their plantations at different growth stages, and to estimate likely fire behaviour.

Recognising the key interests and knowledge of plantation industry participants in bushfire risk management, GHD partnered with the Australian Forest Growers and Australian Plantation Products and Paper Industry Council, to complete the project methodology and work plan.

The Final Report brings together the outcomes of regional plantation fire risk analyses, and highlights regional variability in those specific factors driving plantation fire risk and the significant climate change projection variability between plantation regions, and therefore plantation fire risk.
