Sandgate Rail Grade Separation

GHD Newcastle developed the concept design, project managed and provided independent environmental services to the Sandgate Rail Grade Separation project.

The flyover removed a long-standing obstruction to the efficiency of the Hunter Valley’s coal chain. The separation reduced delays and disruptions by carrying the main north railway over the top of the coal lines so that coal trains could pass uninterrupted to the main export terminal at Kooragang Island. This rail line carries both freight and passenger trains.

GHD worked closely with the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) to develop the concept design and project manage the works from the feasibility phase in 2004 through to completion in 2007.

GHD needed to consider the site’s proximity to protected wetlands and a habitat for the threatened Green and Golden Bell frog when selecting the location for the flyover. ARTC also appointed GHD on behalf of the New South Wales Department of Planning to act as the environmental management representative. This involved GHD taking an independent environmental role and conducting weekly site inspections during construction to monitor compliance with the conditions of approval.

The Sandgate Rail Grade Separation won the 2007 Engineering Excellence Award from Northern NSW Division of Engineers Australia, the Transport and Logistics Achievement of the Year 2007 award from the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport Australia Northern NSW section, and the Construction Excellence Award and Innovation Award from the NSW Master Builders Association.
