Power Delivery

Power delivery calls for the analysis of power system requirements, design of transmission lines, substations and distribution systems and the control and protection of these systems.

Whether you have a small, unique purpose machine, a major industrial facility or an entire power distribution system, by engaging with GHD, you’ll benefit from our full cycle services. Our knowledge includes the planning and engineering of overhead and underground high voltage transmission, and major substations up to 500kV.

Power utilisation systems cover:

  • Industrial power and distribution, MV and HV drives
  • DC networks for traction power
  • Power system communications (including fibre optic)
  • SCADA
  • Security systems (including internal/external perimeter detection, CCTV surveillance and video motion detection)
  • Energy management
  • Substation and Line engineering
  • Network configuration and design
  • Protection and control

Services

  • Survey
  • Environmental assessment
  • Feasibility studies
  • Investigations and audits
  • Engineering design
  • Project management
  • EPCM services

Aramara to Maryborough 132kV power line project

image

Ergon Energy Corporation Ltd wants to construct a new 32km-long, dual circuit 132 kV overhead power line between Aramara and Maryborough in Queensland. The new power line will assist in meeting the increasing electrical load growth in the Maryborough and Hervey Bay areas.

GHD has been commissioned by Ergon Energy to prepare an initial and final assessment report and an Environmental Management Plan (EMP) for the proposed construction of the new power line.

Electrical generation system upgrade for Forks of Salmon school

image

Located off the grid in a remote part of the County, the school generates its electricity with two old, oversized diesel generators. GHD was engaged to find a solution to reduce costs and improve reliability while incorporating renewable energy.

We assisted the School Board in obtaining funding and designing a diesel battery hybrid system that is “plug and play” ready for the addition of photovoltaic panels pending additional funding.

Electricity Cable Tunnel

image

GHD has explored options for electricity supply to the Sydney CBD. Options including overhead cables and trenches were examained, but a tunnel was recommended to avoid disruption to the surface and to the community.

The 1.5 km tunnel between Surry Hills and Haymarket was constructed using a roadheader driven method. GHD provided project and construction management services and was involved at all stages of the four-year project, including options analysis, preliminary geotechnical investigation, concept design, D&C contract documentation, tender assessment, risk management analysis and environmental impact assessment.

Frances Bay Zone Substation

image

The Frances Bay Zone Substation was constructed to meet increasing electricity demand in Darwin’s CBD and to increase security of power supply to the area – now and into the future.

GHD provided the specialist skills and knowledge needed for the multi-disciplinary engineering and architectural design, project management and contract administration of construction of the project.

Humboldt Bay Power Plant nuclear reactor dismantling

image

The Humboldt Bay Power Plant, which was the first nuclear reactor ever built in California, has been out of commission for several years. Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) has begun the dismantling process and is removing the diesel and natural gas generator units to make way for a new power plant.

GHD is providing the structural engineering for the dismantling of the fossil fuel portion of the plant as well as performing the lead and asbestos surveys for the demolition. Our structural engineers are developing plans for the rigging and removal of the fuel rod rack from the containment pool to allow PG&E to remove any nuclear fuel remnants. To aid in the dismantling, we are designing access roads, which may also lead to the site design for the new power plant.
