Preserving the legacy of Washington's iconic landmarks
Partnering with civilian agencies
GHD’s commitment to serving civilian agencies in the nation's capital shines through in our enduring partnerships with key institutions. Our proven track record of excellence has fostered trust among critical agencies, including the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, the National Park Service and the Federal Reserve Board. These relationships have allowed us to make significant contributions to the security and functionality of these essential facilities, ensuring their smooth operation and protecting the vital assets they house.
Safeguarding priceless collections
One of GHD's most significant partnerships in the region is with the Smithsonian Institution. With active projects at nearly every museum on the National Mall, including the National Air and Space Museum, the National Museum of American History, and the National Museum of African American History and Culture, as well as collaborations with the US Department of the Interior and the National Park Service, our expertise spans a wide range of disciplines. From fire protection engineering and code consulting to security systems and IT infrastructure, our team is equipped to handle the unique challenges of preserving and protecting these irreplaceable cultural assets.
Beyond the National Mall, our work with the Smithsonian extends to the National Zoological Park, the Suitland Collections Center Campus in Prince George’s County, Maryland, and even the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Front Royal, Virginia. With a prime security indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract and a presence on nearly all active architecture and engineering (A/E) IDIQs, GHD has become an indispensable partner to the Smithsonian, ensuring the safety and integrity of its vast collections and facilities.
Preserving historic structures
Another area where we have made a significant impact is in our work with the Architect of the Capitol (AOC). With multiple active A/E IDIQ contracts, we have provided critical fire protection engineering and code consulting services for some of the most recognizable buildings in Washington. From the US Capitol complex to the House and Senate office buildings, GHD's expertise has been instrumental in preserving and protecting these historic structures.
One notable project is the US Capitol complex building/complex-wide fire suppression IDIQ, a five-year effort currently in its first year. We are also involved in the multi-year, multi-building renewal of the US Botanic Garden, showcasing our versatility and adaptability in tackling complex projects.
Other key AOC projects include the fire alarm replacement in the Rayburn House Office Building, a massive undertaking involving full high-rise system design, automatic detection throughout the 2.4 million square foot building, and the development of a new fire control room. GHD also played a crucial role in the $500 million renewal of the historic Cannon House Office Building, providing fire protection, life safety, security, and code consulting services over the course of the 13-year project.
Protecting national treasures
At the Library of Congress, our work has been instrumental in protecting the irreplaceable collections housed within the iconic Thomas Jefferson Building. From designing new fire suppression systems for the building's rare book vaults to overseeing the installation of automatic sprinklers and fire alarm systems, our expertise has been critical in safeguarding these national treasures.
Our ongoing commitment
As we to the future, we remain committed to our mission of serving civilian agencies in the Washington region. With a deep understanding of the unique challenges and requirements of working in the nation's capital, GHD is poised to continue delivering innovative solutions that preserve and protect these iconic landmarks for generations to come. Whether it's designing state-of-the-art fire protection systems, providing expert code consulting services, or ensuring the seamless integration of security and IT infrastructure, we stand ready to support the critical work of civilian agencies in the heart of our nation's capital.
