Port Otago 6

Port Otago's vibrant and collaborative workplace

Otago, New Zealand

Client: Port Otago

Sector: Commercial and Workplace

Port Otago’s new three-storey head office is a vibrant and inviting space, designed to foster collaboration, break down silos and promote a strong sense of belonging among employees.

At a glance

Port Otago envisioned its new three-storey head office as a vibrant and inviting space designed to foster collaboration, break down silos and promote a sense of belonging. The goal was to create a bright and airy environment that provided openness, flexibility and natural light, encouraging teamwork and cultural integration.

The challenge

Recognising the need for a revitalised headquarters, Port Otago's existing facility lacked suitability for its intended purpose and did not meet contemporary commercial standards, prompting them to pursue an upgrade.

Our response

Port Otago collaborated with GHD Design and Kieran Cooper Architecture to bring to life the interior fit-out and planning services for its new three-level office building.

Adjacent to a heritage-classified maritime museum, the 2400m² space blends public and private areas, seamlessly integrating museum displays and galleries. Housing around 75 office staff and 135 operational staff across three shifts, the building shares an entry with the museum, emphasising the celebration of port and maritime history.

Designed to be a welcoming space for the community, neighbours and visitors, the office serves as a collaborative hub for both corporate and operational employees. Functionality, understated elegance and a reflection of the industry’s rich history were integral to the design ethos.

Honouring Port Chalmers’ rich maritime past, the building features elevated public viewing spaces for port activities, creating a special experience for cruise passengers and visitors. The three levels foster unity among staff, promoting collaboration and a sense of shared ownership.

With street access and shared public spaces, the building integrates seamlessly with the maritime museum. Restoration efforts, including reclaimed bluestone and wharf timber, ground the development in its surroundings, bringing vibrancy and a strong sense of place.

The impact

The result is a versatile, welcoming space that not only blends seamlessly with the Port Chalmers community but also celebrates its rich maritime heritage. It's a place that fosters collaboration, breaks down silos and creates a strong sense of belonging for everyone who walks through the door.
