GHD Wins major WWTF nutrient removal project for MSD Project Clear
In a significant achievement, GHD has been awarded the contract for a major Wastewater Treatment Facilities (WWTFs) project focused on nutrient removal, enhancing water quality, and environmental sustainability for the St. Louis community.
GHD and MSD Project Clear (MSDPC) are embarking on this crucial project to reduce effluent phosphorus to comply with Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) regulations, which set an aggregate total phosphorus (TP) limit of 1.0 mg/L, based on the combined WWTF design capacity.
With pending MDNR requirements, MSDPC has conducted studies for nutrient removal, identifying the following prescriptive requirements:
- Using chemical removal methods to be more cost-effective and optimize resource use.
- Selection of Bissell Point, Lemay, and Grand Glaize facilities for TP controls, with the Missouri River included to address struvite formation.
- To meet the schedule compliance deadline, the TP removal systems must be operational by January 1, 2029.
Recognizing the significance of this project, GHD has brought together a skilled team, including Donohue & Associates, known for their experience with the Bissell WWTF and similar facilities in the Midwest. The team also includes reputable MWBE firms such as Custom Engineering, TREKK, EDSI, and TSi, all of whom provide exceptional services.
The WWTF nutrient removal project for MSDPC brings numerous benefits. Lowering phosphorus levels significantly enhances environmental protection, preventing harmful algal blooms and improving water quality in local rivers and streams, and contributing to nutrient reductions in the Gulf of Mexico. Tackling struvite formation not only boosts operational efficiency but also extends the lifespan of wastewater treatment facilities. Moreover, the resulting improved water quality promotes better public health and ensures a safer environment for the entire community.
This is an excellent opportunity for GHD to support MSD Project Clear by leveraging our national and global expertise in nutrient removal to have a positive impact for MSDPC and Mississippi River water quality.
GHD has been a global leader in the field for more than three decades. We have designed more than 100 wastewater treatment facility upgrades for nutrient removal, some with phosphorus removal limits as low as 0.009 mg/L. GHD's in-house treatability laboratory will help our team perform timely and accurate bench-scale testing on this project and identify the most cost-effective and beneficial solutions.
This major project represents a crucial advancement in enhancing environmental protection and improving wastewater treatment processes. By implementing advanced nutrient removal techniques, we are addressing key environmental challenges and promoting sustainable water management with a forward-thinking approach for communities.
