Building the future: Enhancing public transport to connect communities
With an expanding urban population projected to reach two-thirds of the global total by 2050, pressures on transport infrastructure continue to mount. GHD’s research initiative, CROSSROADS, surveyed 10,000 people across 10 countries, revealing strong public demand for reliable, affordable and accessible public-transport options. In his article for the National Preparedness Commission, GHD’s Steve Scott, EMEA Market Leader for Future Communities, notes that investment alone won’t suffice; a collective approach integrating social equity, resilience and generational needs is vital for shaping transport systems that can withstand climate and population pressures.
The UK must now prioritise well-designed, implemented, and integrated mobility networks. This is especially important as urban population growth continues to put pressure on our existing networks and systems. However, this cannot be a ‘one size fits all’ solution. The evidence to guide us abounds, and collectively, we must work to better understand the nation’s intergenerational needs to deliver a public transport system that works for everyone.”
