Future-ready Beverley Town Centre with a heritage heart

Design a town centre that honours Beverley, one of Western Australia’s oldest towns, by preserving its unique history and character while enhancing amenities, supporting local businesses and creating a more pedestrian-friendly environment.

Building on extensive community engagement, the rejuvenation of Beverley Town Centre enhances street life through cohesive materials and finishes that complement the town's unique character. Flexible, multi-use spaces were created to support events, informal gatherings and street activation, while urban lighting strategies improved safety and vibrancy at night. New alfresco dining spaces for local business use, promote social interaction and connection within the community.

Pedestrian safety and walkability were prioritised by incorporating Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles, dedicated accessible crossing points, shaded seating areas and street narrowing to slow traffic. Inclusive design is used to improve accessibility to building entries and innovative plinth seating utilising local rock have been introduced as a safety feature, separating parking from pedestrian areas.

Large specimen trees are planted in collaboration with Water Corporation to provide shade and enhance long-term ecological health. Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) principles are integrated to capture and treat stormwater runoff. A water supply pipe on Vincent Street was also accommodated. Locally sourced, durable and low-maintenance materials were selected to minimise environmental impact.

The rejuvenation of Beverley Town Centre provides the urban amenities needed for modern community life while honouring the town’s history. The Shire of Beverley won the 'Heritage Tourism Product' category for the Vincent Street Heritage Walking Trail at the 2022 WA Heritage Awards, underscoring the project's commitment to celebrating and preserving Beverley's unique heritage.
