Doha's Grand Terminal, Qatar
At a glance
The Grand Terminal Port is a part of a series public and cultural buildings that are intrinsic to the experience of the city’s waterfront. It will span 24,400 square metres across two floors plus a technical floor and have the capacity to serve two mega ships – and up to 12,000 passengers – simultaneously.
The challenge
Develop comprehensive design services for two architecturally significant passenger terminals, a public aquarium, national gallery exhibition space and relevant infrastructure to support the central Doha precinct.
With a focus on sustainability, as well as quality management and procedures, the design solution will integrate functional planning with passenger facilities.
Our response
We adopted a people-centric lens to underpin the design of the new Grand Terminal at Doha Port. Harnessing our GHD’s Future Communities methodologies together with behavioural design, we bridged the gap between design intent and human behaviour. By developing a better understanding of the people who will occupy and use the built environment, we were able to enhance the functional performance of spaces.
In particular, using our Behavioural Insights framework, we conducted sophisticated movement analysis, catering for passengers in all experiential areas from drop-off to departure, arrival to pick-up. By tapping into our extensive portfolio contributing to shaping Qatar’s iconic array of buildings, and considering how users’ needs evolve over time, we are making sure our designs seamlessly integrate with the building form and function, delivering future ready facilities.
