Extending the Yonge subway line to York Region
The mission
To support regional economic and sustainability goals through new transit infrastructure that reduces travel times, curbs traffic congestion and offsets greenhouse gas emissions.
The challenge
To extend TTC Line 1 subway service approximately eight kilometres north from Finch Station to growing communities in Toronto, Vaughan, Markham, and Richmond Hill while maintaining fast and reliable operations on the existing line. The extension will increase ridership, connectivity, and mobility. The project will take several years to complete. With multiple stakeholders and community interests in mind, communication is key to successfully executing the project.
Our response
We are providing expertise to further the overall project goals through our tunnelling discipline. In partnership with our consortium, OneT+, our work supports the advanced alignment design, underground tunnelling, sizing, costing, constructability and solving for potential impacts on the surrounding community.
Technical details of the project include tunnelling through an urban environment, multiple new stations and connections to existing GO train and bus service, the York Region VIVA rapid transit network, and local TTC and York Region Transit bus lines.
The impact
The extension of Line 1 will improve transit for residents by reducing travel times and increasing access to transit service between York Region and downtown Toronto. In addition to offering fast, convenient travel options, the project will improve the environment by reducing traffic congestion and greenhouse gas emissions.
