At a glance

At the heart of the brief was a commitment to creating a welcoming and engaging environment that promotes community and inclusivity, with success measured by the sense of pride and connection felt by those who visit the stadium.

The challenge

The North Harbour Stadium Trust recognised the growing demand for a facility that could host major sports and entertainment events in the region. Its intent was to design and develop a purpose-built stadium that would become the premier venue for cricket, rugby, football and other major events in New Zealand, while also fostering community engagement and inclusivity.

A key consideration in the selection of the stadium’s location was its accessibility, with proximity to major transport routes being a crucial factor. The development of the stadium was also seen as an opportunity to stimulate the region’s economy and elevate its status as a hub for sports and entertainment, reinforcing Auckland’s reputation as a world-class destination.

Our response

The 24-hectare North Shore Domain is home of the Winter Code Stadium, which boasts a spectator capacity of 25,000 and a unique 38-meter-high roof that spans 180 meters, offering shelter to 10,000 tiered seats.

The stadium features conference and convention facilities, two major function rooms that can accommodate 1,400 and 800 people respectively and mobile sound rated walls that can divide the space into six smaller rooms.

The major kitchen facilities are equipped to serve full banquet dining, while 28 corporate lounges and offices for various sporting bodies are also provided. Above terrace level, a concourse provides unobstructed views of the playing field and easy access to food, beverages and toilets.

In addition to the Winter Code Stadium, there is an international-standard oval that hosts cricket and football league matches. Other sports fields are dedicated to community use, reflecting the stadium’s commitment to promoting community engagement.

The stadium was designed to prioritise good sightlines and wayfinding, safe egress and accessibility to key amenities. The planning for the stadium expansion to a 60,000 capacity for Rugby World Cup 2011 was part of the initial masterplan.

The impact

North Harbour Stadium is a venue for New Zealand’s favourite sports and entertainment events. The stadium’s location provides easy accessibility for the community, becoming the beating heart of the region, attracting fans and visitors from across the country and beyond, while fostering a strong sense of pride and belonging among the local community.
