The vision for Tōia Ōtāhuhu Library and Aquatic Centre was to create a community hub that brings people together, equipped with a range of facilities and activities that cater to people of all ages and interests.
Auckland Council envisioned Tōia as a vibrant, inclusive space that would embody the values and culture of the local community. With a keen eye for the area's promise, the council sought to create a multifaceted facility capable of hosting a range of activities, transforming it into a hub for local activity.
The result is a facility that not only mirrors the unique character of the local area but offers a functional and accessible space for all visitors.
Every detail of the library and aquatic centre’s interior design was designed to create an atmosphere of warmth and hospitality, infused with a sense of fun. Vibrant hues fill the space, fostering a sense of relaxation, while connectivity between areas facilitates smooth transitions between activities. Whether one seeks the option to read or swim, this venue offers something for everyone.
Natural light pours into the interior through roof lights and glazed walls, wrapping the space in a comforting glow. Robust finishes support the durability of the structure, standing resilient against frequent use. A standout feature in the library is the "Spirit Level," a cloud-like glass sculpture created by local artist Daniel Clifford. Suspended above the main walkway, this masterpiece comprises 1,600 hand-blown glass spheres, each capturing a fragment of the community's breath. Visitors were invited to partake in creating the masterpiece by exhaling air into one of the sculpture's 1,660 bubbles. The resulting work creates a shared sense of Tōia’s history and future.
Tōia has become a vibrant community hub, featuring a range of amenities and activities that cater to people of all ages and interests. Its popularity stems from its knack for fostering unity among the community and visitors. With its varied offerings, Tōia has become a vital part of Ōtāhuhu's identity, standing as a testament to the area's storied past. More than a facility, it serves as a gathering place for the community.
