The brief was centred on creating a signature building that would serve as a true gateway to the city. The aim was to welcome and farewell travellers with the utmost maanakitanga (respect, generosity and care) that Rotorua is renowned for.

The challenge

The existing Rotorua Airport terminal had served its purpose since its initial opening in 1964, with several extensions and additions over the years. However, it was clear that a high level of planning and reconfiguration was needed to meet the demands of modern aviation and to achieve optimal efficiency within the airport’s internal departments.

The ambitious redevelopment project included a careful demolition of certain sections of the existing terminal building and a thoughtful remodelling of internal spaces and relationships between departments. The proposed changes allowed for a more streamlined, functional layout, while also modernising the exterior of the building and creating a more visually striking presence.

Our response

The new Rotorua Airport terminal is not just a gateway to the city, but a carefully crafted building that embodies the essence of Rotorua’s natural and cultural beauty. The design is a representation of the surrounding landscape and showcases the rich history and culture of the region.

Our teams in architecture, mechanical, hydraulics, electrical and structural engineering played a pivotal role in facilitating the redevelopment of the terminal. With a keen eye for detail, we demolished the middle of the original terminal building and remodelled internal spaces to create a more efficient layout.

The exterior boasts a modern, sleek design that complements the natural surroundings, while a glass corridor and landscaped surroundings enhance the airport’s views and create a sense of arrival and departure for passengers.

The incorporation of locally sourced, recycled native timber in the terminal’s construction highlights Rotorua’s wood product manufacturing, forestry and logging sectors. The use of native plants in the landscaping also provides a visual link to nearby landmarks, such as Lake Rotorua and Mokoia Island, creating a seamless connection between the airport and the region’s rich cultural heritage.

In addition to its aesthetic appeal, the terminal’s interior features stunning Māori artworks and carvings that pay homage to the cultural traditions of the Te Arawa iwi, which have inhabited the region for centuries. The integration of functionality into the design delivers a seamless, stress-free experience for travellers, with efficient infrastructure for check-in, security and retail services.

The impact

Overall, the new Rotorua Airport terminal is a thoughtful representation of the region’s natural and cultural heritage. The terminal provides a unique experience for travellers and reflects the commitment of Rotorua to honouring its rich history and culture.
