Maria Lehman, GHD’s US infrastructure director, attended the White House Climate Resilience Summit on September 28 where representatives from more than 25 states, territories, and Tribal Nations across the country were convened to discuss how to build more resilient communities in the face of climate change.

Maria is an ardent advocate and industry expert on infrastructure and climate resilience and has worked extensively with communities across the country to develop and implement infrastructure resilience plans. She is also a strong advocate for environmental justice and believes that all communities deserve to be safe from the impacts of climate change.

"This is an important opportunity to discuss how we can work together to build more resilient communities that can withstand the impacts of climate change. GHD is committed to working with leaders at all levels of city and state organizations and government to ensure that all communities, especially those that have been historically marginalized, have the resources and support they need to adapt to climate change."

At the Summit, Maria participated in a roundtable that covered a variety of topics related to climate resilience, including:

  • How to build more resilient infrastructure
  • How to protect communities from extreme weather events
  • How to support community-led resilience planning
  • How to ensure that environmental justice is at the center of climate resilience efforts

"It is an incredible exciting time to be a leader in the design industry,” added Maria. “As we look to improve more comprehensive codes and standards, streamlined procurement, contracting, financing, and permitting, we can deliver better projects for the people that really need them.  It is about delivering on time, on schedule and within scope.  The new resilience mindset is to plan and protect as opposed to repair and repent."
