GHD has been engaged by Rio Tinto to deliver detailed engineering design for components of a seawater desalination plant at Parker Point in Dampier, Western Australia.

Rio Tinto plans to invest around $395 million into the seawater desalination plant to support future water supply for the company’s coastal operations and communities in the region.

GHD will design the desalination plant and associated water conveyance infrastructure, using technology and process equipment provided by a specialist vendor. Initially, the plant will have a nominal capacity of 4 GL per year and is expected to be operational and producing water by 2026.

Mark Shaw, Western Australian Market Leader – Water, GHD commented, "Seawater desalination is increasingly common as a solution for climate-independent water supply, not only in Western Australia but also globally. Having been involved in almost all the large desalination projects in Australia, we are excited to bring our expertise to this exciting project for Rio Tinto and the local community. Our multidisciplinary team of over 80 professionals will collaborate to deliver this important infrastructure."

We know that water is a scarce resource, particularly in the Pilbara. We are pleased that this desalination plant will help to secure a future water supply for Rio Tinto’s operations and are very enthusiastic to see that the private sector is embracing desalination to reduce risk and increase the resilience of their water supply."
