What is Climate Week NYC?

Climate Week NYC 2024 features over 600 events and activities across the City of New York — in person, hybrid and online. The event takes place from September 22–29 in partnership with the United Nations General Assembly and is run in coordination with the United Nations and the City of New York.

Business leaders, political change-makers, decision-takers and civil society representatives from diverse backgrounds and all corners of the globe gather to drive the transition, speed up progress and champion the changes that are already happening.

Climate Week NYC is hosted by Climate Group, an international non-profit whose purpose is to drive climate action. Climate Group hosts the official program during the week.

What is the focus of Climate Week NYC 2024?

This year’s theme is: It’s Time. People and companies are increasingly waking up to the fact that we need to act fast, yet we’re still not going fast enough. The focus is on breaking down the barriers that are holding us back. Climate Week NYC puts inspiring businesses and governments that are driving the momentum front and centre.

On Monday 23rd and Tuesday 24th of September, Climate Group will host The Hub Live. These sessions will bring together more than 1,000 of the most influential leaders from business, government and the climate sector across key themes including:

  • The new industrial revolution: we’re going through a shift that the world hasn’t seen since the start of the 20th century. The shift of the fossil fuel-based society to a green economy will drive a seismic change not just in corporate energy use, our business models, and the skills needed, but also in the way we build, live, and learn.
  • The energy and transport transition: the global energy system and transportation are among the biggest global emitters, and the corporate sector is playing a key role in the push towards the decarbonisation of the interrelated systems. But with every curb in the road, new challenges appear, and it’s vital we see them coming so we can prepare for them through a smarter, integrated, net-zero transport-energy nexus.
  • Nature, food systems and health: the power of nature to reduce emissions and restore health to our food systems must be scaled to reserve the grim reality of global warming. The nexus between climate and health are inextricably linked with climate change recognised as the largest public health crisis of our time where success is measured not only on carbon emission reduction but the impact it has on human lives.
  • Leadership and green growth: to speed up the transition, we need to finance solutions and technologies at scale — but funders can be hesitant to finance solutions that aren’t scalable yet. To break that deadlock, we’ll be looking at the finance that exists, new models, ways of collaboration between governments and the private sector, and the importance of the transition being fair and just.

Why is Climate Week NYC important?

Climate Week NYC brings together leaders from the world of business, tech, politics, academia and society. It joins the forces of inspiring frontrunners with the means, scale and power to drive the transition forward and turn those who are not yet moving fast enough into action-takers. It’s a platform for hundreds of events, set up by people and organisations that want to push the needle on climate, bound by the same message of pushing towards unstoppable progress, triple renewable capacity and double energy efficiency.

What is the role of GHD at Climate Week NYC 2024?

GHD is a Silver Partner and will be attending Climate Week NYC this year and participating in panel sessions, roundtable conversations and event discussions. Gregory Carli will be speaking on “Time to triple – what will hold back the renewables vow,” discussing how businesses can work alongside policymakers to achieve this.
