Empowering STEMAZING
At a glance
The STEMAZING Inspiration Academy Programme recruits women in STEM, develops their public engagement skills and has them deliver a four-week online STEM programme to children aged seven to nine. Since 2020, data has been collected to create a Power BI dashboard that reveals insights on the initiative's impact and captures participant feedback. This dashboard, along with a central data hub, allows easy updates and embedding insights into their public website to demonstrate social impact and engage online visitors.
The challenge
STEMAZINGKids CIC is a charity that runs initiatives for women in STEM and schools across the United Kingdom (UK). Among these efforts is the STEMAZING Inspiration Academy Programme. It recruits women in STEM and develop their public engagement skills through tailored training and workshops. From this, the teams deliver a four-week programme of online STEM sessions to children aged seven to nine years old. The aim is to promote curiosity and creativity around STEM subjects and create empowered female role models.
As a part of this initiative, data has been collected from a range of sources since 2020. The STEAMZING team wanted to create a dashboard, based on the various datasets they collected, to reveal insights on the impact of the initiative and to capture feedback from participants following their completion of the programme. The goal was to create the ability to explore the data and update the dashboard with ease as more information was acquired.
In addition to the internal data dashboard, the team wanted to explore the possibility of embedding the insights into their public STEMAZING website to demonstrate their social impact to online visitors.
Our response
We held a series of discussions with the STEMAZING team to understand their needs, collect all relevant data and co-create a format for ingesting and displaying their data.
Our team then developed a multi-functional Power BI (PBI) dashboard and created a central data hub that allows the dashboard to be updated with new data.
In the dashboard design we incorporated easy to navigate tools such as location and time filters that allow users to efficiently access the information they need. The dashboard provides comprehensive analysis of the feedback collected from programme participants and can tailor reports to individual programme partners/sponsors, customising charts, data filters and summary statistics to highlight their individual social impact. Partners are then able to see the profound influence their actions are having on the success of the STEMAZING programme.
In addition to the PBI dashboard, we were able to provide an easily maintainable solution for embedding the insights into the STEMAZING website, automating integration when new data is added by users. We achieved this by encapsulating the insights in a python-based software linking to the central data hub. This makes sure the insights displayed on the website remain up to date and allows the STEMAZING team to display accurate information to online visitors building trust and driving engagement.
The impact
The dashboard and central data hub are game changers for the STEMAZING team.
The PBI dashboard brings the STEMAZING data to life, revealing powerful insights about the impact of the programme and enables transformative decision making. For example, the dashboard summarises the number of schools reached by the programme as well as analysing the spatial distribution of participating schools. The STEMAZING team can then make informed decisions like targeting schools with diverse geographic and demographic backgrounds to drive equality, diversity, and inclusion across the STEMAZING initiative.
The external dashboard which is now live on STEMAZING's website allows the team to display their programme’s impact to the public and drives future engagement.
GHD’s comprehensive approach to the collection, storage, and visualisation of STEMAZING’s data allows the team and key stakeholders to monitor their performance, make informed decisions with clarity and confidence and drive transformative outcomes for the programme’s success.
