Client: Ministry of Education

Sector: Education and Science

Torbay Primary School had a vision to utilise the limited space and topography of the site to create an innovative and adaptable learning environment that aligns with the Ministry of Education’s guidelines.

At a glance

Torbay Primary School had a vision to utilise the limited space and topography of the site to create an innovative and adaptable learning environment that aligns with the Ministry of Education’s guidelines. The goal was to meet the increasing need for additional space while maintaining the natural environment surrounding the school grounds.

The challenge
After analysing enrolment projections, Torbay Primary School identified a need to accommodate increasing student numbers. Our multidisciplinary team developed a master plan and design that effectively utilised the sloping site and limited space. We made the most of the sloped terrain in the design of the new twelve-classroom block, creating an innovative learning environment that’s both efficient and flexible, in line with Ministry of Education guidelines.

Our response

The interior design of the building incorporates features that allow for maximum flexibility in space. Sliding doors and movable partitions enable the transformation of the area into class groups of varying sizes, ranging from 2 to 30 students.

To bring the two floors together, a maker’s space was created—a flexible area where students can collaborate, experiment and bring their ideas to life. It’s fully customisable to suit different users and group sizes, making it the perfect spot for designing, inventing, crafting and creating.

The acoustic design features wall-mounted sound absorbent panels and suspended sound breakers that effectively reduce noise levels.

One unique feature of this build is the inclusion of a third set of stairs, located in the centre of the structure in place of a traditional external walkway.

This innovative design element facilitates smoother movement of students from the school grounds to the top level of the classroom block, with no disturbance to other classes.

The impact

The result is an innovative and adaptable learning environment that adheres to the Ministry of Education’s guidelines. This space successfully addresses the school’s growing need for additional space while preserving the surrounding natural environment.
