The mission

United Airlines (United) sought to evaluate their current waste and recycling system in order to develop a roadmap to reduce and divert waste from their operations at Newark Liberty International Airport in support of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s (PANYNJ) goal to achieve zero waste to landfill by 2030.

The challenge

The PANYNJ has a goal of diverting 75-90% of solid waste from landfills and incinerators by 2030. As a tenant and operator with a large footprint at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and to meet the proposed requirements of the PANYNJ, United required an actionable strategy and roadmap that would assist with waste diversion throughout their operations at EWR. The roadmap towards zero waste is a consolidated document that outlines key zero-waste objectives with recommended action items and timelines.

Our response

GHD developed the United Airlines Roadmap towards Zero Waste: Newark International Liberty Airport. The roadmap set out the strategic direction prioritizing opportunities for waste minimization and diversion. Priority focus areas include organics waste diversion, reusable dinnerware, elimination of some single-use plastics such as straws and plastic bags, data reporting, defining key performance indicators, signage and containers, compliance timelines, stakeholder collaboration and education and training.

As a recommended action item in the roadmap, and to further understand the type and quantity of waste generated, GHD’s in-house waste audit team conducted a waste audit of garbage and recycling in United’s Terminal C public and office areas. Information and data from the assessment and audit supported the development of the United Airlines EWR Solid Waste Management Plan Framework, a document drafted by GHD, that summarizes United’s current solid waste system at Newark Airport, key programs, procedures, roles, and KPI’s. The Framework is intended to be a living document that will be continually updated over time as programs evolve.

GHD continues to work with United to action the priority requirements in support of United’s commitment to environmental sustainability, and in achieving the PANYNJ’s zero waste goals.

The impact

The implementation of the towards zero waste strategy will create long-term environmental, social and economic benefits including reduced greenhouse gas emissions, extension of landfill life, market development, new revenue streams, and driving more circular, efficient, and sustainable operations. The forward-thinking strategy is strengthening United’s position as a leader in sustainability and contributing to a circular economy.
