Ōtākaro had a vision to create a space of deep significance following the Canterbury earthquakes. With this goal in mind, it set out to create a space that would be dedicated to reflection, contemplation and healing, providing a powerful means for residents and visitors to come together and honour those that were affected.
In the aftermath of the devastating Canterbury Earthquakes, Ōtākaro recognised the need to create a space of profound significance that would help the community come together to reflect on the seismic events that had forever altered the region. By creating this memorial, the city aimed to provide a space where people could come together to remember, reflect and honour those affected by the earthquakes, while also offering a powerful symbol of hope and resilience for the future.
We completed geotechnical investigation and design, obtained a full suite of planning consents and provided structural design, architectural design, electrical design, civil and hydrology inputs, landscape design, site monitoring of construction works and client and contractor liaison.
The Oi Manawa – Canterbury Earthquake National Memorial is a true testament to the power of collaboration and innovative thinking. Designed in partnership with Slovenian architect Grega Vezjak and delivered by GHD, this open-air structure winds alongside the iconic Avon River, providing a unique and tranquil space for contemplation and remembrance.
The memorial is divided into two distinct areas on either side of the gentle curve of the Ōtākaro/Avon River. The park space on the north bank is adorned with trees, seating and gardens, providing a serene view across the river to the sunny memorial wall area on the south bank.
This innovative structure provides welcoming spaces that invite both Ōtautahi Christchurch locals and visitors to think, reflect and remember.
