GHD has contributed to the recent report from the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), titled From Mine to Grid: Aligning mining and energy systems for the clean energy transition. The report explores how the mining sector plays a critical role in accelerating the global clean energy transition. With demand for critical minerals continuing to grow, the report highlights the sector’s dual challenge of reducing its own emissions while supplying the materials needed for low-carbon technologies.

ICMM created the report to highlight the need for the industry scale up mineral supply for clean energy while reducing its own emissions. Rather than viewing decarbonisation as a constraint, the report reframes it as a strategic opportunity. The report examines how mine sites, as typically large, energy-intensive operations can act as anchor demand for clean energy, supporting broader investment in renewable energy and shared infrastructure in regional energy systems. This integrated approach has the potential to strengthen resilience and create value across the entire mining and energy value chain. GHD supported ICMM as an analytical partner and facilitator, bringing together perspectives from mining, energy, infrastructure, finance and policy into a clear system-level view. We designed and facilitated structured engagement with more than 40 diverse leaders across the mining ecosystem, creating space for candid discussion of shared barriers, enablers and delivery risks.

The result was clear alignment on where coordinated, precompetitive action is needed to unlock scale and accelerate decarbonisation. A clear roadmap is outlined for the next decade, focusing on integrated energy planning, shared infrastructure models, workforce readiness and the adoption of circular practices. Together, these actions aim to move the sector from ambition to delivery, enabling mining to not only support, but accelerate, the transition to a low-carbon future.
