Desert luxury meets sustainable design in Utah's ultimate glamping experience
At a glance
RIM Architects, now part of GHD, served as Architect of Record for Amangiri’s Camp Sarika amenities building, a luxury desert retreat featuring 10 tented pavilions and a stunning communal space that harmonizes with Utah's spectacular canyon landscape.
The challenge
Creating an ultra-luxury hospitality experience in Camp Sarika's remote desert location required innovative solutions to complex challenges. The project site's isolation amid 600 acres of striking desert landscape demanded careful logistical planning for construction and materials delivery. Our team needed to ensure the design would respect and integrate with the pristine natural environment while providing world-class amenities that could withstand extreme desert conditions. The building had to maintain Amangiri's exacting standards of luxury while complementing both the dramatic natural landscape and the adjacent tented pavilions.
Our response
We partnered with Selldorf Architects to create a communal amenities building that anchors Camp Sarika. Our team chose concrete colored to match the desert palette, ensuring seamless integration with the surroundings. The building's bold massing echoes the dramatic canyon walls, while water features and wood accents soften the structure and complement traditional Navajo design elements. Through meticulous planning and innovative construction methods, our team overcame site access challenges and maintained the project timeline. The resulting Commons building houses a restaurant, swimming pool, whirlpool and spa suites that create a luxury oasis in harmony with its setting.
The impact
Camp Sarika demonstrates how thoughtful architecture can celebrate natural landscapes while delivering exceptional guest experiences. The project contributes to the region's tourism economy and honors local cultural heritage through its design and wellness offerings. Since opening in April 2020, the camp has provided guests an unparalleled opportunity to experience Utah's canyon lands in sustainable luxury. The project sets a new benchmark for hospitality design in sensitive natural environments.
