The challenge

Help Evolve Power find a way to accelerate the company's vision of repurposing an idle coal mine to produce green hydrogen. The project needed to attract investment to utilise the unique features of Evolve Power’s Tent Mountain site located in southwestern Alberta, Canada.

Our response

Drawing on our in-depth knowledge of commercial, technical and sustainable solutions, we produced a comprehensive economic analysis that considered:

  • The market opportunity for green hydrogen
  • The ability to leverage a pumped hydro energy storage system on-site and a high potential wind power resource
  • The sensitivity of improving the economics of electrolysers and renewable energy pricing
  • Future carbon taxes, policy and regulations and clean fuel credits.

Working collaboratively with Evolve Power we:

  • Initiated the concept of green hydrogen at Tent Mountain and supported the idea of the Renewable Energy Complex
  • Developed a high potential opportunity for investors and stakeholders
  • Prepared and submitted Federal funding applications under Canada's Clean Fuels Standard programs, including an auditable estimate of carbon intensity
  • Studied potential market needs and timing across regional industries and energy sectors
  • Detailed future key risks and opportunities
  • Provided technical and capital cost reviews
  • Determined the approach for delivering the project's green hydrogen portion, including interface details with the other complex elements.

The impact

In a first of its kind for the region, Evolve Power’s renewable energy complex will use the mountain's favourable topography for pumped-hydro energy storage, powered by nearby wind turbines, along with a green hydrogen production facility.

The project will contribute to Alberta's overall decarbonisation efforts, reducing emissions and positively influencing multiple industries, including heavy-haul transport and regional coal mining operations.

Our team is currently delivering the preliminary phase of the project's green hydrogen element.
