GHD recognized with 2025 CCBJ Business Achievement Award for Hartland Landfill Renewable Natural Gas Facility

VANCOUVER, British Columbia — Feb. 6, 2026— GHD, a global professional services company, has received a 2025 Climate Change Business Journal (CCBJ) Business Achievement Award for its role in the development of the Hartland Landfill Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) Facility, Vancouver Island’s first full-scale RNG production system.

The annual CCBJ awards recognize outstanding business performance, innovation and leadership in the climate and environmental sectors. Nominations for the 2025 awards were evaluated by CCBJ staff, advisory board members and regular contributors. Winners will be formally recognized at a banquet during the Environmental Industry Summit XXIV on April 2 in San Diego. GHD was honoured in the consulting and engineering category.

GHD supported the Capital Regional District (CRD) in replacing Hartland Landfill’s aging biogas plant. With GHD involved from the earliest planning stages through delivery, the Hartland facility now captures landfill gas and processes it into renewable natural gas for integration into the FortisBC network. The result is a community-focused energy source that advances decarbonization while reducing reliance on conventional fuels.

This transformation is projected to reduce the capital region’s greenhouse gas emissions by up to 475,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide over the next 25 years, which is the equivalent of removing emissions from 105,000 Canadian homes over the project’s lifetime.

“Full operational status in 2025 represents the project’s most critical milestone, positioning it as one of Canada’s most innovative RNG deployments and a remarkable example of municipal climate leadership,” CCBJ stated in the awards announcement.

As the owner’s engineer, GHD guided the project through an innovative two-step design, build, operate and maintenance (DBOM) delivery model. The team developed the performance-based design criteria, conducted technology evaluations and supported the procurement of the DBOM partner. GHD also provided contract administration throughout design, construction, and commissioning and supported the CRD as the facility transitioned into full operations.
