The CareerTrackers program creates paid internship opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander university students with corporate partner organisations. The program aims to help ‘close the gap’ by enhancing the participation of and opportunities for Indigenous Australians in the workforce. The Gala brings interns, alumni, colleagues, and employers together to celebrate the success and achievements of every intern across Australia. GHD was one of the first organisations to become an official 10X10 partner with CareerTrackers – a commitment to an intake of minimum 10 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander interns annually for 10 years. GHD has proudly hosted 135 Indigenous internships through CareerTrackers since the formation of our partnership in 2010.

The most recent group of CareerTrackers interns joined GHD offices across Australia, focusing on a range of disciplines such as civil engineering, administration, project management, geology, architecture, science, digital transformation and marketing.

GHD’s Kinji Munkara-Murray, Masters Student and Environmental Sciences intern and Simon Harrow, Aquatic Sciences Service Line Leader received CareerTrackers Project Excellence Award. This award recognises a manager that has provided an intern with an opportunity to deliver a project of great significance, and an intern who has risen to the challenge making a lasting contribution to their sponsoring company.

“Since starting as an intern in 2018 with GHD, I have been able to work on a variety of projects across Australia. The team that I work with are all very welcoming and supportive which has made me feel like I belong at GHD,” says Kinji.

“Receiving the Project Excellence Award is a great recognition of all the hard work I’ve put in over the last three and a half years,” adds Kinji.

This year five of the CareerTrackers interns at GHD also received ‘Gold Diaries’, which are awarded to interns who maintain a distinction average or higher throughout the year of university. Congratulations to Jonah Bedford, Caitlin Hull, Michael Martineer, Pantju Nam and Jye Robinson.

We are so proud to have such a talented and large group of interns connected to our company. Creating opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in our industry, and breaking down systemic disadvantages, is a key action in our new Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan. Not only are we building interns skills and confidence for careers in the private sector, but the benefits go both ways with our own people getting beneficial learning opportunities from welcoming an intern into their team.

GHD is the one of the few organisations to be involved with all the CareerTrackers sister organisations around the world: InRoads (USA and Canada), CareerTrackers PNG (Papua New Guinea), Tupa Toa (New Zealand) and CareerSeekers (Australia).

At GHD we’re proud to have maintained a strong connection to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities since our foundation more than 90 years ago. Our Reconciliation Action Plan commitments are a core part of both the way we operate and how we deliver our clients’ projects. Our aim is for reconciliation to be fully embedded into our business to foster a culturally safe environment for all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. www.ghd.com/RAP
