GHD to support Port of Newcastle’s growth as future hydrogen hub
GHD has been engaged to work on the Port of Newcastle’s Clean Energy Precinct as it reaches a major project milestone, signing agreements for Front End Engineering Designs (FEED) and Environmental Impact Statements (EIS).
Together with Lumea and coNEXA Infrastructure Partners, we will carry out the FEED and EIS studies covering electrical infrastructure, water services, general infrastructure, storage, berth infrastructure, and pipelines to berth. The work will inform future site enablement, site layout, and supporting infrastructure which will be used to prepare environmental planning approvals.
Port of Newcastle is on a strategic diversification pathway and has a pivotal role to play in the broader energy transition, not only for the Hunter region but for the state of New South Wales and Australia as a whole.
Our partnership with Port of Newcastle will help progress the development of the Clean Energy Precinct to lay the foundation for a future of affordable, reliable and clean energy. Fully constructed, the project will facilitate the production, storage, distribution and export of clean energy such as green hydrogen and green ammonia.
Our services will include site establishment works such as bulk earthworks, drainage, roads, power and water utilities, transfer pipelines, ammonia storage, berthing facilities and associated infrastructure. The parallel scope of work will be the environmental impact statements which will be developed in collaboration with the engineering design.
Backed by a $100 million funding grant for hydrogen readiness from the Federal Government and administered by the NSW Government, the project will assist Port of Newcastle in becoming the state’s future hydrogen hub, delivering a major economic boost for the region. It is estimated to generate 5,800 new jobs to the Hunter region by 2040, supporting the NSW Government's objectives to accelerate decarbonisation and clean energy opportunities by increasing renewable energy generation, storage, and investment under the Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap.
We’re proud to be partnering with Port of Newcastle to bring our local knowledge and technical authority to this signature project for the Hunter, a project that illustrates the important role the region plays in our nation’s clean energy transition. We look forward to working closely with Port of Newcastle, Lumea and CoNEXA, and engaging with proponents and the community over the coming months.”
