Tom Foley, GHD’s Future Energy Leader for the EMEA region, highlights the vital role of battery energy storage systems (BESS) in the transition of the United Kingdom (UK) to renewable energy. While the country has made strides, like the closure of its last coal-fired power station and the success of the Contracts for Difference auction, the challenge remains in balancing intermittent renewable sources like wind and solar. BESS helps by storing excess energy during high production and releasing it when demand is high or generation is low, ensuring a reliable power supply as the UK strives to become a clean-energy superpower by 2030.

Despite the difficulties, there is a shared commitment to building energy infrastructures that are fit for the future. By integrating advanced technologies and strategic planning, countries can empower communities to create a resilient and sustainable energy future. The journey toward a greener future is no easy feat. Ongoing dialogue with Government and public bodies will be essential for making meaningful progress toward our climate goals.”
