Auckland Central Police Station's community focused transformation

Auckland, New Zealand

Client: New Zealand Police

Sector: Civic, Community and Justice

With a need to accommodate up to 500 staff members, the New Zealand Police sought to create a dynamic and welcoming environment for its Auckland Central Police station.

At a glance

With a need to accommodate up to 500 staff members, the New Zealand Police sought to create a dynamic and welcoming environment for its Auckland Central Police station. The objective was to design a modern and agile hub that could foster collaboration and flexible working while providing a sense of comfort and security.

The challenge

At the forefront of the design brief was the New Zealand Police’s commitment to the safety and security of its staff and visitors. In order to achieve this, the building needed to undergo significant seismic and passive fire upgrades so that it met the required safety standards.

Our response

We worked closely with the New Zealand Police to create a space that would not only meet its practical requirements but also reflect its values and commitment to community safety. The resulting space is an inviting and modern facility that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

To provide a seamless working environment and easy location of teams, the building is established into various neighbourhoods that promote collaboration and flexibility.

In line with the New Zealand Police’s shift towards activity-based working, the open-plan area features high-back seating and leaners that provide the perfect setting for impromptu meetings and brainstorming sessions.

The fitout is classic and timeless, utilising a primarily neutral colour palette, offset with splashes of fresh and vibrant blues and greens in acoustic treatments such as hexagon walls, hanging three-dimensional screens and ceiling lattices.

A social hub was incorporated, which provides a comfortable environment where staff can recharge and connect with their colleagues. The furniture in the social hub has been designed to be flexible, allowing the space to be easily transformed into a briefing room or other functional space as required. Adjacent to the social hub, the Community meeting rooms have been designed to provide a warm and inviting space for whānau support services. These rooms provide an essential service for the wider community.

The station also features innovative technology and equipment, which is critical to the effective operation of a modern police force. This includes security systems, advanced communication tools and other essential resources that support the day-to-day activities of law enforcement officers.

The impact

Overall, the design of the Auckland Central Police station is a testament to the commitment of the New Zealand Police in providing its staff with the best possible environment for their work. It is a dynamic and flexible space that fosters collaboration, innovation and community engagement.
