GHD Digital collaborated with a large global mining client to enhance their environmental stewardship by developing a robust greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions forecasting application. This solution was crucial for their decarbonisation efforts, ensuring compliance with emission targets and supporting informed management decisions. Using advanced digital solutions, we streamlined processes, aligned measurement methodologies with regulatory requirements and enabled effective emissions management.

The challenge

The client faced a critical challenge in accurately forecasting GHG emissions for their decarbonisation processes. They needed a dynamic model to ensure compliance with emission targets and inform management decisions effectively. The primary requirements for this model included reviewing measurement approaches to align with regulatory requirements, developing an GHG modelling and scenario simulation solution with Microsoft Power Platform based on historical performance data, and ensuring reliable emission forecasting for environmental compliance and ESG reporting.

They needed an integrated solution that would provide better support for decision-making, operational planning, regulatory compliance and long-term sustainability targets. Inaccurate forecasts hindered their ability to plan for future emissions reductions, anticipate regulatory changes, and manage climate-related risks. This also posed a threat to their reputation with stakeholders, as they could not demonstrate a robust approach to GHG emissions management.

Implementing an accurate GHG emissions forecasting solution for various operational scenario was vital for the client’s objectives. In the short term, deviations from forecasts could indicate changes in operating conditions requiring corrective actions. In the long term, the application would help identify gaps in the decarbonisation roadmap, support carbon pricing in financial evaluations, and ensure comprehensive emissions management from planning to monitoring.

Our response

GHD Digital aimed to design and develop the GHG modelling and forecasting solution to support decarbonisation, operation planning and emission monitoring. This solution needed to account for execution impacts, anticipated ramp-up curves, new stage or expansion timing, and historical emissions. It was essential to empower operations teams to monitor and address emissions deviations with both monthly and annual forecast resolutions, requiring semi-annual updates and provisions for ad-hoc work.

We worked closely with domain specialists to co-develop the comprehensive GHG Model for Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, incorporating physical and data models specific to our client’s assets and operations. This solution featured a user-friendly interface, data storage, and visualisation options integrated with their existing Microsoft and Business data systems. The model provided a framework to explore and evaluate emissions baseline models, conduct scenario analysis, and manage uncertainties.

Our approach involved a collaborative effort with our client’s environment and operational staff to refine and finalise the model. We leveraged our emission modelling knowledge to create a bespoke digital application that considered execution impacts, anticipated ramp-up curves, historical emissions, and the impact of planned decarbonisation projects. This helped to create comprehensive forecasts for operational emissions and compare them against actual data.

Our innovative emissions modelling solution, enabling complex calculations for Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, meant users could create and compare multiple scenarios to forecast emissions under different conditions and evaluate reduction strategies. We also integrated a user-friendly interface to simplify data input processes and improve data accuracy and efficiency.

An interactive dashboard was designed to turn their complex data into customised reports for enhanced data understanding and exploration. Our end-to-end solution seamlessly integrated data collection, analysis, visualisation, and reporting into a cohesive GHG management application.

The impact

The GHG emission modelling solution enabled accurate tracking of Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, offering a clear understanding of current emission levels. By forecasting future emissions under various scenarios, the solution allowed our client to take proactive measures to reduce emissions. The scenario analysis feature enabled them to compare different emission reduction strategies, optimising resource allocation and efforts towards achieving their Net Zero targets.

The solution also facilitates regular progress monitoring, ensuring they remain on track with their goals and allowing for timely adjustments as needed. Clear visual reports promoted transparency and accountability, maintaining stakeholder confidence in their emission reduction efforts. Insights derived from the solution supported strategic decisions related to operations, investments and initiatives, further driving their sustainability objectives.

We successfully transformed the client’s environmental stewardship through this comprehensive and innovative GHG emissions modelling solution. This collaboration not only supported their decarbonisation efforts but also enhanced their operational efficiency and stakeholder relations.
